DeSousa said all 827 birds were euthanized because they were bred and raised to kill other birds.
“The death we gave them was painless compared to the barbaric bloody death that they could face in a ring,” DeSousa said.
DeSousa said officers have previously seized birds from the man but based on technicalities, charges were not filed.
During the searches, officers also found weapons at the San Diego County property and at one of the properties in Orange County, DeSousa said. An 18-year-old man was arrested at the property in San Diego County for possession of knives and a probation violation, he said.
“Cockfighting is a gambling driven operation,” DeSousa said. “Sometimes you’ll find prostitution, drugs and weapons.”
