This year marks the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, and many classical musicians are performing his works to pay tribute.
A feisty composer with a quick wit, Handel became famous for the still-popular “Messiah,” and his works were revered by the likes of Bach and Beethoven.
Sadly, “Theodora” premiered in London shortly after an earthquake, which might explain the meager audience that opening night. It was his least performed work, and reportedly was revived just once before his death.
Composed in the summer of 1749, the oratorio tells the story of a virginal Christian woman, ordered into prostitution for refusing to worship Roman gods. She falls in love with the Roman soldier Didymus, a closet convert who helps her escape the brothel but risks his life in the process.
